These "naked" pixels are are the PCBs used in our 20mm round pixels, just without the clear plastic cover or wiring.
These RGB LEDs can be individually controlled via a 2 wire interface (clock and data). Each LED accepts 5 bits for Red, Green, Blue for a total of 32,768 bright colors in a 16 bit payload. The data can be clocked in at up to 25 mHz, so you can drive thousands them at a very high frame rate. Even an Arduino can run thousands with ease using just two data lines. Each LED is daisychained off the previous LED. Wires between LEDs can be extended up to several meters, but you may need to drop the data rates slightly.

Modules can be daisy-chained indefinitely, however power should be applied to chains longer than 40 and then again for every chain of 40 LEDs. This ensures consistent brightness along the chain.
Applications would include: Jewellery, Artistic installations, LED Video Screen array, PC case illumination, bar/club lighting, festive lighting, garden lighting, displays, installations, signage, car customization.
